The winners from this year’s elite men’s and women’s competitions around the world
Many of the Road National Championships around the globe take place from June 19-23, 2024, making this one of the busiest and most important blocks of the racing season.
The top riders around the world will go head-to-head in the battle for the time trial and road race national championships titles and a chance to wear the coveted national champion’s jerseys for one full season.
To keep you up to date with all the action, Cyclingnews has compiled a list of the national champions, which will be updated regularly as more are crowned.
We will have reports, results and photographs from all the major championships and regularly update this index page with information, links and information.
With the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia Women and Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift fast approaching in July and August, many of the new national champions will debut their new trade team-adapted national champion’ jerseys in the most important races of the summer.
REPORTS AND RESULTS
Australia: Luke Plapp took the honours in the road race for a third year in a row and another time trial title at the Australian Championships in January, while Ruby Roseman-Gannon won a rain-soaked elite women’s road race and Grace Brown won a fourth time trial title.
New Zealand: Aaron Gate jumped from track to New Zealand Championships road race victory, while Ella Wyllie swept up the victory at the elite women’s road race. Kim Cadzow secured the elite women’s time trial title, and Logan Currie won the elite men’s time trial title.
Ecuador: Miryam Nuñez secured the elite women’s road race, while Jhonnatan Narvaez took the elite men’s title. Richard Carapaz and Nuñez won the elite men’s and elite women’s time trial titles, respectively.
Colombia: Alejandro Osorio saved a little extra in his legs from an early breakaway and outlasted Sergio Higuita and Egan Bernal to win his first Colombian national title, while Paula Patiño won the elite women’s road race. Daniel Martinez and Diana Penuela won the elite men’s and elite women’s time trial titles in Colombia.
USA: Sean Quinn beat Brandon McNulty to take the elite men’s road race in Charleston, West Virginia, while Kristen Faulkner won her first elite women’s road race title after a solo effort. Triathlete Taylor Knibb stunned the field when she won her first elite women’s time trial national title, as McNulty secured his third consecutive stars-and-stripes jersey in the race against the clock for elite men.
Germany: Nils Politt (UAE Team Emirates) went back-to-back as the elite men’s German national time trial champion, while Mieke Kröger came back from retirment to win her third German national time trial title for elite women. Franziska Koch (DSM-firmenich-PostNL) claimed her spot as the new German road champion after she beat Liane Lippert (Movistar) and Antonia Niedermaier (Canyon-SRAM) in a three-up sprint. Marco Brenner (Tudor) broke Bora-Hansgrohe’s hegemony to win the men’s road title.
Great Britain: Josh Tarling and Anna Henderson stormed to victories in the elite men’s and elite women’s time trials, respectively to kick off the British Road Championships. Pfeiffer Georgi again proved unstoppable on the climb of Saltburn Bank to win the women’s road race. Ethan Hayter overcame Lewis Askey to win the men’s title.
Netherlands: Riejanne Markus wins the elite women’s Dutch time trial title for the second year in a row, while Daan Hoole beat Mick van Dijke by one second to win the elite men’s time trial title. Chantal van den Broek-Blaak won the women’s road race, while Dylan Groenewegen landed the men’s title.
Italy: Filippo Ganna won the elite men’s time trial for the fifth time in his career, while Vittoria Guazzini secured the women’s time trial as Elisa Longo Borghini was relegated. Elisa Longo Borghini made amends by soloing to victory in the women’s road race. Alberto Bettiol (EF Education-EasyPost) soloed to victory on home roads in Sesto Fiorentino to win the elite men’s Italian road race title.
Ireland: In the final kilometre, Fiona Mangan (Cynisca Cycling) overhauled to claim the Irish road race championship for elite women. 2023 champion Lara Gillespie (UAE Development Team) settled for third, just two seconds down. Earlier in the week Mangan won the national ITT race. Darren Rafferty (EF Education-EasyPost) powered to victory in the men’s road race, while Eddie Dunbar (Jayco-Alula) claimed the time trial title.
Belgium: Lotte Kopecky secured a sixth consecutive title in the elite women’s time trial, as Tim Wellens took the title in the men’s event. Kopecky proceeded to take a crushing victory in the women’s road race after a 30km solo attack. Arnaud de Lie (Lotto Dstny) overpowered an all-star field in the final sprint and secured his first elite men’s road race national title.
France: Audrey Cordon-Ragot scored a seventh time trial title of her career, while Bruno Armirail reclaimed the elite men’s time trial title. Juliette Labous won the women’s road race. Paul Lapeira kept Decathlon-AG2R’s momentum going by winning the men’s road race.
Spain: David de la Cruz rolled back the years for his first victory since 2018, while Mireia Benito repeated her 2023 TT Nationals win, but by a considerably bigger margin. Usoa Ostolaza claimed the women’s road race, ending Mavi García’s long run as national champion. Alex Aranburu took a solo victory in the men’s race, keeping the title in-house at Movistar.
Canada: Pierre-André Côté won the men’s time trial, while Paula Findlay collected her third consecutive women’s time trial title. In the elite men’s road race, Michael Woods (Israel-Premier Tech) won the championship for the first time in his career.
