The solar shone brightly on two US riders on the ultimate day of Paris-Nice, with Magnus Sheffield (Ineos Grenadiers) successful stage 8 in good and compatriot Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike) ending second to safe the GC victory.
Sheffield launched a solo assault on the brutal Col des Quatre Chemins climb with 12.5km to go, having dropped Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) within the course of, the Dane probably the most lively rider in his quest to safe the dash classification award.
Meanwhile, Jorgenson matched many assaults on the 119.9km day of climbing, finally making his method to the lead chase group, and utilizing the quick descent into Nice to cross the road 29 seconds behind Sheffield.
Felix Gall (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale) accomplished the stage podium in third, 26 seconds forward of a gaggle of six chasers, which included Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), who fought to carry on to second total.
Jorgenson made it back-to-back GC titles on the Race to the Sun, this time with a margin of 1:15 over Lipowitz and 1:58 over Thymen Arensman (Ineos Grenadiers). Sheffield’s highly effective experience moved him two spots within the GC, and he completed 19 seconds behind his Ineos teammate for fourth total.
Jorgenson later described his last day within the saddle at Paris-Nice as “a reduction”.
“I’ve been fascinated about this week for the previous 4 months,” he stated. “Just loads of stress coming off now. It’s good to do it [win] and know I did all the pieces I may. It labored out,” the two-time winner stated on the end to broadcasters.
“I credit score my workforce, actually. I used to be so well-supported this week. Today, I used to be fairly remoted and I knew that will be the case within the mountains. But the remainder of the week we took full benefit of actually having a powerful workforce on the flats, and tactically and positioning.
“Everyone was dedicated from day one, and that feels actually good. I’m so pleased to be on this workforce. And I’ve gained Paris-Nice two years in a row – that is loopy to say that.”
