Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) claimed the victory on an unexpectedly brutal stage 6 of Paris-Nice. After 4 and a half hours of racing on a chilly, moist and windy day, the Dane beat Josh Tarling and Sam Watson (Inoes Grenadiers) in a lowered bunch dash.
The larger story of the day was a vicious echelon assault from Visma-Lease a Bike that succeeded in distancing 5 of the highest 10 riders within the common classification. Matteo Jorgenson prolonged his lead, thanks partly to his staff’s efforts and a six-second time bonus on the intermediate dash.
Following the abandon of teammate Jonas Vingegaard earlier than the stage, Jorgenson now has a 40-second lead within the GC over Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), with Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) climbing into third at 59 seconds.
The riders who missed out included João Almeida and Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates), Lenny Martinez (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) and Clément Champoussin and Harold Tejanda (XDS Astana).
Almeida dropped to fifth at 2:40 whereas Martinez completed a lot additional again.
