Thibau Nys (Lidl-Trek) defended brilliantly to assert general victory on the Tour de Hongrie as Wout Poels received stage 5 after a brutally powerful uphill finale into Pécs.
After his two back-to-back stage wins, Nys marked strikes and emptied the tank to defend his yellow jersey, holding off assaults from Marc Hirschi (UAE Team Emirates) and Emanuel Buchmann (Bora-Hansgrohe).
The German champion animated a lot of the finale with Nys and Callum Sctoson (Jayco AlUla) following, however it was Poels who bridged to the main quartet within the remaining kilometre earlier than outsprinting all of them to the road.
This was Poels’ first win in 2024 and Nys’ first-ever stage race victory in his younger profession. The robust efforts of Buchmann and Poels noticed them transfer as much as the rostrum whereas Hirschi and Diego Ulissi dropped out of the highest three after a disappointing remaining climb.
