A battered and bruised Sam Welsford (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) obtained an ideal leadout from his BORA-hansgrohe teammates to take his second win on the 2005 Tour Down Under.
Arne Marit (Intermarché-Wanty) took second and Bryan Coquard (Cofidis) was third within the quick finale.
After crashing within the first 5 kilometres, Welsford continued on with ripped shorts as his staff managed the early break, and supported him when he was put beneath stress the third time up Menglers Hill when he misplaced contact with the sphere within 25 kilometres to go. With his teammates supporting him, Welsford managed to catch again round 10 kilometres later.
The Australian stayed on his Danny van Poppel’s wheel to return to the entrance for the ultimate dash whereas riders had been preventing for his wheel. Van Poppel pulled off to launch Welsford to the road whereas behind riders confirmed their discontent with Van Poppel’s strains within the dash.
