Hugo Scala Jr (Project Echelon Racing) outpaced Fábio Costa (ABTF-Feirense) on the uphill end of stage 5 of the Volta a Portugal and captured the most important win of his profession.
The 26-year-old US rider was a part of the day’s 12-rider breakaway, and he soared to the entrance together with his Portuguese companion within the closing kilometres to determine the 176.8km stage in a two-up dash. Once Scala Jr hit the gasoline, Costa couldn’t discover go round and settled for second.
Julius Johansen (Sabgal-Anicolor) led a chase group of six riders throughout the road for third in Bragança, 5 of them collectively at 14 seconds again and the sixth rider falling again one other three seconds
The breakaway was allowed a leash of greater than 4 minutes, which gave José Félix Parra (Kern Pharma) a style of the digital lead for a time. After a relaxation day Monday, the Volta a Portugal returned for a fifth day of racing from Penedono and headed north. After an early labeled climb within the opening 25km, a 2.6km fourth-category slope at Mėda (5.8%), the route handed by the Douro Valley.
The last half of the 176.8km stage then ramped again up with two extra labeled climbs, together with the 12.1km stretch to Serra de Bornes, a class 2 part with a median of 4.5%, the place the breakaway was gone for the remainder of the day.
